Self Portrait as a John Hughes Extra

By Rachel Mehl

I’m the wiseass sidekick
who smokes a cigarette
during gym class,

and later is murdered
by her boyfriend.
That’s a lie.

I’m the girl
in the background
with frizzy hair and a denim shirt.

See her in the hall?
She is turned the other
way. Look closely

at the books in her locker,
Catcher In The Rye, The Bell Jar,
Corso’s Mindfield.

She’s got the nervous energy
of someone who’s never been kissed.
She peels a spotted banana.
