Swimming with Frogs

By Alison Stone

Ripples connect us

in this bed of water.

Warm air thick from rain

obscures the stars.

Buoyed by darkness,

it is easier to speak

the shame our daylight faces

hide—prayer books

you burned, your mother’s

madness; my scarred arms.

Each story a small

warty fist unfurling.
