Redeem the Gifts of Childhood

By Sydney Avey

Open the lid
let me out
I am the talent that wanted to shout
down the ages; I struggled to breathe
on a cold plain in Kansas
a dance hall in Queens
too soon surrendered
and boxed up in dreams
in an old trunk of treasures
lost in the beams
of an attic torn down
with the house on the lane
where we can never go again.
