A Sonnet for the Affluent

By William Ogden Haynes

The sunsets of our youth were
magical when we took the time to see
them falling behind the fir
trees at a campground and they would be
there for the looking, but now
we lounge on an expensive patio set
glancing through the boughs
we’ve planted by the swimming pool to get
precisely the view we aimed to achieve
as we sip expensive dry
martinis and mistakenly believe
that we own the sky.
But it was always free of charge,
just as red, just as large.
