What Words Know

By JW Drake

Words do not know what

they mean.

Sayers may say doubt not the promise of pain

really thinking they mean it and nothing more

while hearers hear the promise of the pain and

kill the sayers,

impaling their tongues on

green sharpened sticks to hide

in their caves,

and they fear the day and hour, hating the sayers

and in their madness driving the sharp green sticks into their own ears,

back through tiny brittle bones and softer tissues,

saying finally pain words in their writhing

dialects before dying, as promised.

Words only know

that they are

only words.
